Nature

- Traces of the ice age and beavers...

Nature has left its stamp on the area more than anything. Especially the last ice age has left clear traces in the shape of valleys formed by meltwater rivers, clay slopes and various types of sediment. All these traces in the landscape are a distinguishing feature of the area.

If you want to take a survey of the landscape in this area, we can recommend a trip with the local train line, VLTJ (Midtjyske jernbaner ). Through the windows of the train you can watch the landscape change from hills and trees to lyme grass. Before arriving in Thyborøn, you pass the Isthmus of Harboøre, one of the most important areas in Northern Europe for migratory birds.
Here, birds like peewits, redshanks, oyster catchers, ruffs, godwits and many other kinds can be sighted.

Marked wandering paths
If you like walking or cycling, the Land of Hills and Waves is the place. The area is very suitable for walking and cycling, and at Lemvig Tourist Office, brochures are available containing descriptions of marked routes all around the area. Cycling maps are also available.

If you enjoy spending your free time on horseback, see the homepage about horsebackriding in the area: Hestnordvest. Or ask the staff at the touristbureau in Lemvig

Beavers in the forest
The ice front cuts through the forest district of Klosterheden, one of Denmark’s largest plantations. This fabulous playground for children and grown-ups is also an Eldorado for Denmark’s only population of wild beavers. 18 pretty broad-tailed beavers, to be exact, were set free in 1999 in an attempt to get the beaver back to the nature of Denmark . Today (2008) the population is estimated at around 100 beavers.

Close to nature from the bus
If you take a ride with Naturbussen, the Nature Bus (groups) you are certain to get the optimal experience of nature. A telescope directly connected with a computer, a TV screen and other kinds of digital hardware brings sights from as far away as 500 yards away very close.
