The Museum of Religious Art

Museums

- From local to international art galleries…

The Museum of Religious Art hosts travelling exhibitions of Danish and international art. The permanent collection includes the Danish artist Bodil Kaalund’s biblical illustrations, prints and paintings, as well as works by Erk Heide, Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen, Peter Brandes, Nicolaus Wehding, Eastern Greenland folk art, and other things.

Apart from that, the museum mainly exhibits recent, religiously inspired art. Previous exhibitions include works by Peter Brandes, Georges Rouault, William Heinesen, Arne Haugen Sørensen, Karl Isakson, Thorbjørn Olsen, March Chagall and Edvard Munch. 2007 has seen exhibitions featuring works by Bjørn Nørgaard, Kjell Nupen and Ruth Smith. The museum has a shop and a café.

Lemvig Museum – This is where to find the cultural history of the Lemvig area.
The beautiful façade of Lemvig Museum hides many big and small rooms reflecting life from the past to the present in the Lemvig area.
Keywords: The famous Danish cartoon entitled “Life in Smalltown” (Danish title: Livets gang i Lidenlund) by Henning Gantriis, rich cattle-owning farmers and poor cottagers, life on the West Coast with shipwrecks and the life-saving service, poet Thøger Larsen, painter Niels Bjerre, sculptor Thorval Westergaard and life in artistic circles at Bovbjerg.

Jens Søndergaards Museum – The museum is situated at Bovbjerg on the edge of the cliff facing the sea. The house used to be the artist’s own summer cottage and studio from 1930 until his death in 1957, and most of the paintings were done in exactly this spot. Outside the museum, three simple sculptures, done by Jens Søndergaard in cement, are exhibited. Cement is also the material used in breakwater blocks down below on the beach. “The Cement Man” on the extreme edge of the cliff is looking across the sea. He almost seems to be taken from a painting – or maybe from real life.

Kunst- og Kulturcenter Tuskær (Arts and Cultural Centre Tuskær) is situated on the very coast line just behind the sea wall in Fjaltring. The centre has built up its own collections of artefacts developing and describing the common human language. The collection contains textiles, signs and ornaments from the beautiful Viking Age “Osenberg Boat”, wickerwork, prints and other things. Apart from the exhibitions, the centre often hosts special events, such as lectures, courses in painting, seminars, concerts etc.

The Tukak Theatre – Exhibitions of unique Greenland collections. The theatre also performs mask and drum dances for schools and groups (advance booking is required). Phone: 30696496
