Harbours

One of Denmark’s largest fishing harbours is Thyborøn Harbour, where over 119 vessels belong.
Built 1915-18, the harbour is now being expanded towards the south. From Thyborøn, thousands of tons of fish are sold to the whole world via the internet, but in July and August on Wednesdays between 11 and 12 a.m., traditional auctions are held, with the auctioneer swinging fish, figures and money.

The harbour of Lemvig still shows traces of its past as a fishing harbour with a fish auction (not active any longer), an ice factory and slipways. The couple of pale blue fishing vessels in the harbour, contribute to an environment and an atmosphere that still smells a little of fish.
Behind the red wooden sliding gates of the former fish auction is where the local fishermen are found. Next to the entrance one or two bunches of dried fish are often hanging, which is a tradition still in use.
If you visit the area during springtime or early in the summer it is not unusual for the clothes on the clotheslines to be replaced with flatfish.
There is a public toilet and a disabled toilet in the long black building on Mathildes Kaj (Mathilde’s Pier) in the middle of the harbour front.
