The North Sea outside Thyborøn

Thyborøn

- Next door to the Northsea...

Thyborøn is very windy and will always be.
Ever since 1826, when the sea broke through the isthmus, forming what is today called the Channel of Thyborøn, life in that area has always been marked by the wind and weather.
Thyborøn is one of the country’s largest fishing towns with a lot of fishing-related businesses. Today the population of Thyborøn is around 2500.

The harbour and the ferry
Being one of the largest fishing harbours on the west coast, Thyborøn Harbour is a place where enormous amounts of industrial and edible fish are landed. If you want to experience a fish auction, then visit the auction hall on the harbour front. On Wednesdays in July and August you can also participate in an “old-fashioned” auction. “Old-fashioned” because professional auctions take place on the internet nowadays.

In the northern end of the harbour, the marina is situated. This part of the harbour is also where you will find the Red Hall, which houses the tourist office and Fiskehallen (“the Fish Hall”), among other things. If you want to experience how real sea-fishing is done, we can recommend a trip with M/S “Emma-Line”.

Right next to the Marina, the finest blue-flag bathing beach in the area is found, so if the wind is in the east or in the southwest, there is nothing better than letting the waves of the North Sea wash over you.
On the outskirts of Thyborøn you will find the Thyborøn-Agger Ferry Service, which brings you across to Thy and the Isthmus of Agger in only ten minutes.

Culture and history
Here in the middle of this rough nature you will also find Kystcentret (the Coastal Centre) and Jyllandsakvariet (the Jutland Aquarium), two of Western Jutland’s most significant exploratoriums with more than 55,000 visitors a year. Situated in the street named Klitvej you will find Sneglehuset (the Shell House), whose exterior is completely decorated with shells. Inside the house there is an exhibition of bottle ships and shells, among other things.
You may also visit the exhibition about the bunkers in the small red building close to JyllandsAkvariet. The bunkers at the beach was part of the so-called Thyborøn Fortress during the German occupation of Denmark. The fortress included 66 large and 40 minor concrete bunkers, built from 1940
