The Business Community

- A fringe area or...?

With England as our closest neighbour to the west, it is not surprising that the Land of Hills and Waves is a fringe area from the perspective of Copenhagen. But that is not the way we see it, and in the past it was not like that either. Historically, and from a Western Jutland perspective, Hamburg and Northern Germany were the places that counted, and Copenhagen was just a distant province.

Cattle and fish
The area used to be populated by farmers living off cattle breeding and cattle trade, and fishermen who lived off the riches of the sea. From a modern perspective, the population had a global outlook. Most people here were used to foreigners because of the many shipwrecks, and those who carried on cattle trade often went to Hamburg and other towns in Northern Germany.

A multi-faceted business community
The business community today is still multi-faceted and rich in entrepreneurs. There are several enterprising iron and metal industries and furniture manufacturing businesses. The area also houses many small and several large modern farms, and on the fields can often be seen large, grazing herds of cattle. Centred around the harbour in Thyborøn, the fishing industry also plays an important role in the area.
