Lemvig
- The only mountainous town in Western Jutland...
Here among hills and waves, at the bottom of Lem Inlet (Danish: Lem Vig) and at the foot of the beautiful moraine formation, the only mountainous town in Western Jutland, Lemvig, is found. The town is also called the Dimple of Western Jutland, or simply Smalltown, which is a humorous name derived from a famous Danish cartoon portraying small-town life.
Founded in the early Middle Ages, the town was mentioned in a tax dispute between King Valdemar and the bishop of Ribe in 1234.
The population figure is 7000, and the town is an enterprising commercial centre.

The Harbour
As soon as you arrive in Lemvig, you will sense the romance and the idyll. The air is fresh, there is a spicy fragrance, and if you are going by car down Vesterbjerg, various hairpin bends will have to be passed through before you reach the harbour, where there are still a few cutters to be found. There is room for yachts, too.
In the middle of the harbour, Mathildes Kaj (Mathilde’s Pier) is situated. The name is derived from a cargo vessel named Mathilde, which ran between Lemvig and Copenhagen in the years between 1922 and 1949. In the black storehouse on Mathildes Kaj there are bathing facilities for yachtsmen, as well as a restaurant and a fishing gear shop.
Culture and art
If you take a view of the town from the Fiord, your eye is soon caught by the onion-shaped cupola on top of the white Lemvig Church, which is situated in the middle of the town. Among other things in the church you will find decoration and paintings by the Danish painter Bodil Kaalund. The two museums of the town – the Museum of Religious Art and Lemvig Museum – are also worth a visit, as is Kammergalleriet, Vestergade 15, Lemvig, for local Arts and Crafts.
The town has its own sixth form school (Danish: gymnasium), a business school, and a really good library offering wireless internet access (a hotspot). In Lemvig there is also a cinema – called Bio-huset – which is largely run by volunteers, and which shows films all days of the week except on Mondays.
In the hills above the town you will find Lemvig Station with a train line that connects Lemvig with Thyborøn and Vemb. Outside the station you will also find the central bus stop in the town.
From Vesterbjerg in the town down below, the 176 steps of the so-called Station Stairs lead up to the railway station. Built in 1881, the stairs afford one of the most magnificent views of the town, the harbour and the inlet.
